If you want something done right, do it yourself! Nothing could be truer when rating air purifier performance. Trustworthy reviews are scarcer than Dodo birds. So here is a ten point checklist to help you do your own air purifier rating.

#1 Determine the Type of Air Purifier

Smart Filter

This is simple enough. There are six types widely marketed as air cleaners. Here is the bottom line:

  • HEPA uses a specialized filter capable of removing particulates down to .01 micron. This includes mechanically or chemically produced dusts and mists, biologically produced allergens and pathogens like bacteria and viruses. The 0.3 micron size often stated in ads refers to the Most Penetrating Particle Size. It only allows a mere three in ten thousand of these particles through.
  • HEPA Type: Maybe as good as 95% HEPA performance, maybe as bad as 50%. Who knows? Real data is hard to find. If you don't know what you're getting, why buy? Steer clear of anything labeled something-HEPA or HEPA-something.
  • Electret Type Electrostatically Charged Fibers make the best furnace filters you can buy. When used in an air purifier, like the 3M Ultra Clean, they do a good job. Unfortunately effectiveness declines steadily and they should be replaced every three months. A low initial cost is offset by filter replacements over the life of the unit. Good for allergies but compare lifetime cost against the better HEPA units.
  • Electrostatic Precipitators: Initial efficiencies lie in the 50% to 80% range, similar to HEPA-type filters. Unfortunately plate loading can reduce efficiency by as much as 80% in as few as three days. Regular maintenance cleaning is a must. Ozone is produced, often at dangerous levels. Avoid them.
  • Ionizers use high voltage to electrically charge particles causing them to "static cling" to something. Unfortunately they cling to walls and furniture producing the dreaded "black wall effect." The EPA thinks they may also cling to your lungs. Avoid them.
  • Ozone Generators are banned in Canada, all but banned in California, and are very much discouraged by agencies like the EPA. Ozone sickens and kills. Reject utterly.

#2 Size Matters When It Comes To The Filter

More filter surface means less resistance to air flow, thus more air flow. More particles are captured with each pass. Room air is cleaned faster. The filter lasts longer before replacement.

#3 Total System Efficiency

Just because it has a HEPA filter doesn't mean its nearly 100% efficient. Some air purifiers bypass air to help reduce backpressure and cool the motor. Some leak like sieves due to poor construction. Any air not going through the filter is air not being cleaned. Look for an air purifier proud to verify total system efficiency like the IQAir HealthPro series.

#4 Air Changes per Hour

For greatest health benefits you need 4 to 6 air changes per hour. This should be measured on some speed other than high. High is always the noisiest speed. So unless you're fine with the sound of a hurricane in your home, find one that exchanges the air sufficiently at a lower speed.

#5 Filter Costs

Air purifiers with separate pre-filters, main filter and gas phase carbon filter usually cost less in the long run than those with fully integrated filter systems. Long filter life will also reduce your long term costs.

#6 Filter Changing Ease

Most air purifier manufacturers make it easy, but there are some that require tools and a major disassembly operation. Top quality doesn't have to be complicated as proven by IQAir air purifiers.

#7 Filter Change Indicator

Why change the filter if you don't have to? Then again, running a clogged filter isn't doing you any good and may stress out the motor. The best way to know when the filter needs changing is by a pressure sensitive switch that detects when increased backpressure against the filter indicates clogging. You can find this system in the IQAir HealthPro series.

#8 Gas and Odor Removal

Many manufacturers have a pathetic carbon impregnated fiber pad. These few token ounces of activated carbon can't remove much. You need many pounds of activated carbon. Special treatments with catalysts and chemisorbers can enhance gas removal ability. Make sure it targets the pollutants of greatest concern to you because each carbon blend is focused on different chemical contaminants.

#9 The Warranty

Good air purifiers last. Most top models come with no less than a five year warranty on all parts including the motor. I've seen eight and ten year warranties from companies like AllerAir. Their record proves their air purifiers really do last this long and longer. I have an AllerAir 5000 that's going strong after five years.

#10 Return Policy

Most top quality air purifier manufacturers have a 30 day return policy. Some, like IQAir allow up to 60 days. This isn't for defects. You have a warranty for that. This is to allow you time to personally test the air purifier and see if it satisfies your needs. Don't consider any air purifier you can't test and return.

The Soviet Air Force began operating the Tupolev TU-95 Bear in the mid 1950's. The Russian Air Force is still operating the venerable Bear and it's projected to continue service until the middle of the current century. The Bear was originally developed as a long range, high altitude, bomber. It fulfilled a role similar to the B-52 Stratofortress of the United States Air Force. Over the years its been modified to perform a variety of missions to include maritime patrol, cruise missile launch platform, Airborne Early Warning as well as a civilian airliner variant.

The TU-95 was a main stay of the cold war. It performed a number of missions for the Russian Military and became a common sight to U.S. and NATO air crews that were sent to intercept it. The maritime variant performed a number of useful missions for the Soviet Naval Forces including surveillance, tracking, and targeting for various soviet military assets. TU -95s routinely departed from the Kola Peninsula, flew across the Atlantic, down the eastern seaboard of the United States, and landed in Cuba

Air Bear

The Tu-95 is the fastest propeller driven aircraft, and some say one of the loudest aircraft in the world. It's powered by four Kuznetsov turbo prop engines rated at 10,000 SHP (shaft horsepower) each. Each engine drives contra-rotating propellers that have an 18ft diameter. The engines are mounted on wings that are swept back 35 degrees. The fuselage is cylindrical, has a rounded nose and tapers towards the rear. The TU-95 has a large bomb bay and is able to carry 20 tons of ordinance. The Bear also has two 23mm tail guns, which provide defense against fighters attacking from the aircraft's rear

Crew requirements vary depending on the mission. A generic crew consists of two pilots, one tail gunner, and up to four sensor operators. The Bear has a maximum takeoff weight of 414,500 pounds, a maximum speed of 575 mph, a range on 9,400 miles, and a service ceiling of 39,000 ft.

The TU-95 continues to test the readiness of US and NATO air crews by probing national boundaries. A role that began half a century ago and will continue for many years to come. The TU-95 has been a symbol of Soviet Aviation since the 1950's. Numerous upgrades have kept it a vital piece of Russian military strategy today and well into the next century

Recognition: The Northern Myotis or the Northern Long-eared myotis is another medium sized microchiroptera with a length of 3 to 3.8 inches and a wingspan of 9- 10 inches and weighting in at .18 to .23 ounces. These bats can be distinguished from the myotis lucifugus (little brown bat) by its long ears. This bat has a dull brown fur and the stomach is a lighter color. The Northern Myotis has a longer tail and a larger wing area that other similar sized bats.

Range: This bat ranges through almost all of Canada and the Eastern United States and as far west as parts of Wyoming in the Black Hills and Big Horn Mountains and the Northern part of Florida.

Trion

Habitats: The Northern Myotis hibernates in natural caves, iron mines, sand mines and other abandoned mines. They primarily roost and inhabit forested regions, and riparian wooded zones. They will roost under loose bark, buildings, behind signs and shutters and in crevices. The females will roost in warm sites of around 30 individuals in maternity colonies.

Food Habits: The Northern Long-eared bat will hunt for insects over water, forest clearings and under the tree canopies. They glean insects from the leaves and other surfaces. They appear to especially like flies. They do eat moths, beetles and leafhoppers. As with most insectivorous bats they are still opportunistic eaters.

Problems: As with all bats, some of the problems are the same. Disturbances of the hibernaculum causes stress on the bats and in the winter can severally stress them to death. Retaining diverse wooded areas will help the bat population in general as well as the Northern Myotis. Education of the public would probably be the best single protection of all bats.

I Just want to talk! They blocked facebook at my school with smart filter, apparently its a dating service and that's the reason they blocked its so dumb.

I cant open facebook what can I do I'm lost without facebook, please help, its blocked every where. I am really lost. My workplace has blocked facebook. My life is over. Please help me to find a way to get my life back.

Smart Filter

Please, I have been without facebook for weeks now please guys find a way around these idiots that block facebook all the time.

Make a search through the Internet and you will find thousands of pleas like the ones above. If you are one of these people whose workplace has blocked facebook then its time to move on, update those CV's and search for a new job!

The main criteria for your new job search is that you will have all day access to the Internet and all day access to facebook. Obviously this rules out applying for a job frying chicken so we need to set our sights on a office job.

Once you have found a job that may be considered suitable, been called for an interview, then the most important thing you need to remember is to be prepared and list the most important questions that you must ask at the interview;

1. Will I have my own computer in the office?

2. Will I be working in an open plan office (so everyone can see what you are doing) or will I have my own office (Obviously your own office is the option we are aiming for here.)

3. So you have found out that you wont have your own office! In this case you need to make sure that you will at least be partially hidden in a cubicle. You can ask the interviewer

4. I am such a hard worker that I cannot work with lots of office noise and distractions. Will you provide me with my own cubicle so I can be the most industrious worker in your company and exceed all your expectations of me.

5. Great, that worked and you will get your own cubicle. Now we have to get to the nitty and make sure that you are going to be able to spend all day on facebook and finally get your life back.
6. What is the company's view on the social side of the internet? Maybe the interviewer wont
understand this question so you must clarify.

7. What do I mean? Well basically do you want me to remain a bachelor for the rest of my life or will you allow me to search for a spouse?

8. Let me clarify for you. DO YOU BLOCK FACEBOOK?
